St Joseph's School 1970-71

"During the 1970 -71 season I was a member of the successful Hunslet St Joseph's RC side, can't remember who we beat in the final but I am sure that it was by a wide margin."

The school had a rich tradition in schools rugby and that this particular team were unbeatable also winning the Edgar Meeks trophy until they finally succumbed to Parkside losing to them in the final of the Harrison Shield in 1973.

Thanks to Chris Dunne for this.

Hunslet Carr 1952-53

"I played for Hunslet Carr in the Goldthorpe Cup Final in 1953, we played at the old Parkside ground and our opponents were St Joseph's". "I had played there in 1951 in the Cripps cup.

Hunslet Carr 1928-29

Yorkshire Evening Post 28th March 1929

Hunslet Carr 1924-25

Extract from the memoirs of Dick Thorpe a member of the winning team.

"My next keen recollection is my introduction to the infamous Hunslet Carr School Rugby League Team, at the tender age of 9. The school was in the midst of a 5 year spell of undefeated games in school rugby throughout Yorkshire. In my first full season, at 12 years of age, in the first team we amassed 1588 points and only had 3 points against."

Thanks to Dick Thorpe and his family for that.

Gary Bradford in Canada has both a Goldthorpe Cup and a Cripps Cup medal from 1925 that were won by his grandfather Fred Lyell.

The Goldthorpe family have a medal from this year and also a silver serviette ring inscribed "Goldthorpe Cup 1925".
