Goldthorpe Cup Winners 2017-18

Corpus Christi 26 Brigshaw High School 0

The 2017 renewal took place at the South Leeds Stadium on November 30th. Conditions were far from ideal with freezing temperatures, a strong wind and intermittent snow showers. Brigshaw had territorial advantage in the early stages and it looked like only a matter of time before they would get points on the board. But resolute defence kept the line intact. Almost the first time Corpus Christi got into their opponents half they went over in the corner for an unconverted try. That was to be the only score in a hard fought first half.

In the second half Corpus Christi crossed the line a further four times and eventually ran out 26 - 0 winners. The game was much closer that the score suggests with Brigshaw showing that they also had plenty of skill and pace but on the day it was not enough.

A player of the match trophy was awarded for the first time this year. It was won by Lucas Green, who scored two tries, and the award was presented by Bob Pickles. Leeds Rhinos players Ash Handley and Jack Walker were on hand to present the medals and Albert Goldthorpe's great grandson, Stephen McGrail, had the privilege of presenting the cup.
